Flower crowns: Wedding accessories that embrace spring

Wedding accessories can completely transform your look and the humble flower crown can have you looking like a spring queen in no time at all.

Choosing your flower crown

This beautiful accessory comes in all shapes and sizes, so there is bound to be a style and option that will suit your dress and wedding day.

A white crown interwoven with soft, green branches, is a completely delicate and soft look that is perfectly subtle. If you want to stand out a bit more, embrace colour and opt for a crown that brings together fuchsia, violet and sunshine yellow.

The size will also change the look. If you want something simple, choose a crown that is slender. Those that use blooming roses and other sizable flowers are bold and definitely channel spring. Mix these two together and go for a crown that is mostly made up of small flowers with a couple of big beauties woven through, too. Colour is an important part of your crown – for instance, white and cream flowers will be more whimsical and understated while dusky orange and yellow have a distinctive vintage feel.

Where did flower crowns come from?

There is no doubt that flower crowns have become increasingly popular in the past few years. However, they have been around for a long time before they were a staple of vintage, whimsical and bohemian styles.

The ancient Greeks wore flower crowns to honour the gods. This was also the era when army victors would be awarded laurel halos to acknowledge their achievements.

In the Ukraine, flower crowns were known as a vinok and were part of traditional folk dress. After vows were exchanged in a Ukrainian wedding, wreaths made out of periwinkle and myrtle were placed on the couple’s head. To this day, flower crowns are often worn during festivals and special occasions such as weddings.
