Will I suit a mermaid style wedding gown?

When a bride goes to choose her wedding dress, more often than not, she will have an idea in her mind of what she'd like to wear. The great thing about a boutique such as Eternal Weddings is that you have a carefully curated selection of beautiful wedding dresses from which to choose.

Whether it's the voluminous skirts of a princess-style gown or the sleek elegance of an A-line, we'll be able to guide you towards a dress that enhances your natural beauty and flatters your body shape.

Few styles of dress are so polarising as the mermaid gown – nipped in at the waist, this style hugs your curves to the upper thigh before flaring out at the bottom. But will this dress work on anyone?

Can I wear a mermaid dress if I'm short?

The common myth around mermaid style gowns is that they can be overwhelming for more petite brides, but this is thankfully not necessarily the case. With an expert seamstress who specialises in wedding dress alterations, nearly any style of dress can be worked to suit your body type.

"If your heart is set on a trumpet or mermaid skirt, don't let height concerns get in the way of it", says Brides magazine. "For maximum elongation, make sure the dress is fitted through your hips and flares out just above – not below – the knee. This will give the illusion of longer legs."

Will I still be able to dance in a mermaid gown?

Due to the style, naturally you may find that your range of movement is a little less than what you're used to, similar to a pencil skirt. Experiment with moving around and changing the position of your feet during your fitting, as you won't be standing still all day long!

As with any wedding dress fitting, make sure you bring your heels (or your flats, for that matter) to the boutique, as this will affect the way you are measured for alterations. You can have a sneak peek at some of our beautiful mermaid styles online.
